At Cheshire Peaks & Plains Housing Trust we want to make sure that your home is suitable for your needs.  We recognise that your needs may change due to illness or disability and, that as a result you may require alterations to allow you to make the most of your home.  We are committed to providing adaptations that help our customers to enjoy independence, privacy and dignity.

What is an adaptation?

An adaptation is a change or alteration in or around your home to allow you to live more independently or to allow you and/or your carer greater safety and mobility.

Typical adaptations may include:

·         Grab rails in the bathroom

·         Grab rails at door entry points

·         Additional internal handrails

·         Hand rails along steep garden paths

·         Ramps to enable easier wheelchair access

·         Stair lifts to help access upstairs

·         Lever taps

·         Relocating light switches & power sockets for easy access

·         Widening door openings

·         Over bath showers with additional wall tiling

·         Low-level access shower trays

Although these are the most common adaptations, we will consider any alterations based on your personal needs and circumstances.

Who can apply?

Any tenant of Cheshire Peaks & Plains Housing Trust is entitled to apply for an adaptation, providing that they or a family member have a disability or a specific need which is preventing them from leading an independent lifestyle.  You may also be referred to us for an adaptation by another specialist agency, such as Social Services or through your GP.

Leaseholders are not covered by the Trusts Adaptations Policy and are therefore not eligible to apply to the Trust for adaptations or alterations to their properties.

What will happen next?

If the adaptation you have requested is minor and the installation can be done without specialist advice, such as fitting a handrail, then we will make an appointment with you for our Repairs team to carry out the work.

If your adaptation request is for larger work or a more complex alteration, for example a bathroom replacement, then you will be referred to a Community Services Occupational Therapist.  The Occupational Therapist will arrange to visit you to carry our an assessment of your needs.  They will then provide us with a report which will recommend the most appropriate adaptations to suit your circumstances.

We are committed to providing adaptations wherever possible in order to help our customers to enjoy independence, privacy and dignity.  However, if we receive more requests for adaptation than our budget can accommodate, we will use a priority system to decide which work to carry out, based on customer need.  We will ensure that each and every case is decided on its own merits and individual case review.

Our priorities are listed below along with the time in which you can expect the work to be undertaken.

Priority One: Lever Taps, hand rails and Grab rails
Target completion Time: Within 28 Days

Priority Two: Intercom systems, level entry showers, wet room conversions, stair lifts, ceiling hoists
Target Completion Time: Within 3 Months

Priority Three: Property conversions, property extensions, any new build or construction
Target Completion time: Within 26 weeks from the date of necessary Planning or Building Regulation Approval

Some properties will not be suited to the adaptations required.  In this case we will provide support and assistance if residents want to move to properties that have already been adapted or are more suited to adaptations.

Please note that all adaptations are carried out at no cost to the customer or their family.
